Last night I was at a networking event, and as usual one question was asked more than any other: ‘How’s business?’ Akin to ‘How are you?’ most people really don’t care about the answer, but it’s probably for the best as I never know how to thoughtfully respond anyway. Are we busy? Yes. Would we like to be busier? Sure. Are we headed in the right direction? I think so. Do we stumble frequently? I know so. As a small business owner, I find that it’s far easier for me to get consumed by our challenges than it is to recognize our achievements. Most of the time that makes it difficult to measure what true success looks like, but every once in a while you get reminded about how simple it can be.
I received an email from a client today thanking us for sending thoughts and condolences during a difficult time. Unbeknownst to me the client’s mother passed away, and whoever received the news on our side decided to send flowers on behalf of the Sequence team.
And that’s it. That’s what success looks like. Success is doing the right the thing. Success is sending flowers to a client that we’re not particularly close with, because relationship aside we recognize that it might make them feel better. Success is not just understanding this basic life principle, but having an entire team embrace it as well. Success is recognizing that this small gesture transcends everything else that we do. It makes us who we are, and reminds me every so often that our business is doing just fine.
